The CompanyGC Rieber Carino Ltd. was incorporated in May of 1957 as a wholly owned subsidiary of G.C. Rieber & Co. A/S, Bergen, Norway. Changes in the market situation in combination with the increasing protest movement in the early 1980's caused the industry to come to a virtual halt. However, the importance of having a seal harvest quickly became evident as the cod fish stocks virtually disappeared from the East coast of Canada as the seal herd increased very rapidly. This very stock of Cod fish were once considered the largest in the world. Harvesters worked together with the Rieber group of companies and were able to start a new type of seal harvest based on the older Harp seals called Beaters. The world opinion towards the seal harvest has changed since the industry ended the Whitecoat harvest. Now the seal industry is also playing an important role in balancing the ecosystem. Not only are sealskins made into fashionable fur and leather products, but seal meat is also used extensively and the health effects of seal oil as a food supplement is becoming widely known. |
